The 'Whiskey' Class deisel-electric submarine class was begun after WWII by the Soviet Navy based roughly on the German Type XX1 boats. These boats were in service as early as 1948. They originally carried a 76mm deck gun and 57mm FLAK gun, in addition to theri 530mn torpedo armament. These were soon removed and replaced by a single 25mm cannon. 'Whiskey' Class subs were supplied to China and North Korea, and China began building her own version soon afterward.

This was a sturdy, reliable class that could remain submerged for up to three days without snorkeling. They made good speed both on the surface and submerged, diving to depths below 500'. The Whiskey Class was a relatively small boat for an ocean-going sub at 76 metres, with a crew of forty.
